Growing up with roots in Puerto Rico, the island has always been a sweet anchor for me. But it was only after returning a dozen times as an adult—traversing every corner from the lush El Yunque Rainforest to the shimmering coastlines in its laid-back surf towns—that I truly learned how to pack for it. Whether you’re lounging at a resort in Condado, wave-chasing in the west, or exploring farm-to-table restaurants all over the island, the secret to smart packing for a trip to Puerto Rico is filling your suitcase with staples that transition effortlessly, from sun-drenched mornings at the pool and salt-kissed beach days to adrenaline-fueled cave adventures.

That said, Puerto Rico demands a wardrobe as vast as its landscape: You’ll need quick-dry fabrics that survive sudden rain showers and comfortable footwear that moves with you. To survive the tropical heat and humidity, vibrant bathing suits and versatile cover-ups are your best friends. You’ll also need breathable loungewear that’s gentle on the skin in case you get a little too much sun. When the sun sets, your style must match the high energy of the city—think flowy dresses, fun handbags, and comfortable shoes that can handle the uneven, blue cobblestone streets of Old San Juan while dancing Bachata late into the night.

After just having returned from a two-week trip to Puerto Rico, I have some tips on what to pack and what to leave at home. Read on for a curated collection of looks to experience all the magic Isla del Encanto has to offer.

    Coastal-chic daytime pieces

These daytime staples bring an elevated aesthetic that I like to call “mermaid-chic.” Breathable, matching sets take the guesswork out of wondering what to wear—and they always look put together with little effort. I’ve been loving these boho-inspired options from Free People and Hanne Bloch. Whether you’re shopping and bar-hopping in Viejo San Juan or dining at fancy beachside restaurants, each of these looks can be dressed up or down with the right accessories.

To fit the beachy theme, I love styling shorts or skirts with sand-hued halter tops, such as these styles from 12th Tribe and Lulus. And of course, a pair of reliable denim shorts is always a vacation staple; I have and love this timeless pair from PacSun.
