The puff pastry crust isn’t the only secret to the success of this turkey pot pie recipe. For the velvety sauce, you’ll need an ingredient that might be even less expected: American cheese. When combined with flour and water (you could use chicken stock or turkey broth, but you really don’t need to), the superior meltability of American cheese creates a lush no-roux gravy that clings to every part of the pot pie filling. As for that filling, we start by roasting a boneless turkey breast, but you could certainly swap it for 1½–2 lb. of leftover turkey from a holiday…

When I saw this old Atlantic article, I did a double take… The title was “The Women Naming Their Babies After Themselves,” and at first, I was confused. Sharing a name with your child seemed bizarre. But writer Maggie Mertens pointed out that for centuries men have named sons after themselves, of course, so why can’t women name their daughters the same way? “For certain mothers, sharing a name with a child is an intrinsically feminist act simply because it’s unexpected in our society,” she writes. “My brother’s a Junior, and his whole life, no one bats an eye when…

The next experiment is to add a button to the system. For this, we use the joystick button on the Oxocard Connect. Our goal is to toggle the LED on and off when the button is pressed. The button sends a digital signal to the GPIO pin. On the Oxocard, the signal is zero (or False) when the button is not pressed, and one (or True) when the button is pressed. The button has only two positions, but as shown below, we define four states: Up: the button is not pressed. Pressed: the button has just been pressed. Down: the…
