Under the forest tapestry of fluffy fruit bats and intersecting branches, I crept closer to a prehistoric-looking giant tortoise that had taken refuge in the shade of some shrubbery. My presence on Aldabra Atoll in the Indian Ocean was improbable for a number of reasons. The world’s second-largest coral atoll is not only extremely remote (it’s about 700 miles from Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles), but it also requires visitors to adhere to intense biosecurity measures. The atoll is home to 100,000 giant tortoises, the largest population in the world, as well as to nearly 400 other endemic species…

A well-styled bookshelf tells a story. It’s a reflection of where you’ve been, what inspires you, and the life you’re creating. From weathered novels to sculptural ceramics, every item on your shelf can hold meaning when it’s chosen with intention. Camille’s own approach to shelf styling begins with restraint. “It’s so easy for open shelves to become catch-alls for random tchotchkes and way more books than I actually need to have out,” she says. “I want to achieve that feeling of abundance but with less stuff—the more clutter, the more my personal style gets lost in the mix.” Her warm…

Silicon Valley leaders including White House AI & Crypto Czar David Sacks and OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon caused a stir online this week for their comments about groups promoting AI safety. Step 1: Prepare the sharpening stone. Photo: Tom Fenenga for Bob Vila To sharpen scissors effectively, you need a sharpening stone (sometimes called a bench stone).
