There’s been a lot of improvement in nontoxic bras in the past decade: Brands have expanded their offerings from stiff, 100% cotton options to include other materials like bamboo and Merino wool as well as designs that stretch and move with your body. Higher quality materials and better manufacturing practices can often mean higher costs, but we’ve rounded up brands that range from the budget-friendly to the more splurge-worthy to meet all your organic bra needs.
Why are nontoxic bras important?
Our clothes can contain all sorts of synthetic and harmful materials, including PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” synthetic chemicals, pesticides, and plasticizers. Our skin can absorb these materials (especially when we move and sweat), which can lead to anything from skin irritation to hormone disruption. And this is especially true for bras, which sit right next to highly porous breast tissue and lymph nodes. Think about how often you wear your bras, and how many hours a day they stay on your body — so it’s important that they be made out of nontoxic materials.
Can an organic/nontoxic bra actually be supportive?
Yes, absolutely, but you want to look carefully at the item — a lot of brands will tell you the support level (usually ranging from light to firm), and reviewers aren’t shy about sharing whether the support lives up to the hype. While organic and nontoxic bras are most often simple and made with natural fabrics, there are options that come with different design and support levels, so your ideal garment depends on a few factors:
- Structure: Is the bra wireless or wired? Does it have a double lining? Is the cup seamed or padded? Is there a firm underband? Generally, a pull-on, unlined, or wireless style is probably more likely to give a light level of support, though some of our favorite brands have made strides in providing support without relying on plastics or synthetics.
- Fabric: A bra that’s 100% cotton doesn’t have any stretch to it, which might mean that the fabric may lose support or wear out over time. Many of these brands use a touch of responsibly sourced or recycled stretch material like elastane or spandex, or alternatively bio-based materials, to help with longevity and wear.
- Construction: Is there metal or plastic hardware? Are the straps adjustable and cushioned? Do the cups have internal side slings for lift? Complex construction doesn’t automatically mean the bra is better or worse than a simple bra, but design details are often intentional, especially when it comes to larger sizes.

ThirdLove was founded in 2013, envisioning a bra that fits all different types of breasts (if you’ve never taken it, their free size quiz is extremely helpful whether you’re buying a bra or not). Their designs are already optimized to minimize irritation and chafing, and they offer “half-cups” for those of us who are between letter sizes (A ½, B ½, and so on) with a robust return policy of 60 days so you can find your perfect fit. Reviewers have raved about them for years — and they’ve been an important part of the movement towards better bras.
The brand has evolved to include even more sustainable options; in 2023, they launched their organic cotton bras with cotton made without pesticides, genetically modified seeds, or fertilizers, as well as latex, formaldehyde, and flame retardants. This aptly named Organic Cloud Cotton Collection (soft and comfy as a cloud, get it?) is made with 93% certified organic cotton and 7% spandex. One of their bestselling options is their Perfect Coverage Bra, which has memory foam that covers your nipple and molds to the shape of your breast. Their Wireless Bra also has light foam and zero underwire, and their classic T-Shirt Bra has medium coverage and is meant to conform to your body — looking great under clothes, as the name implies. Sizes go to DDDDD, and reviewers say the bras are a nice mix of comfortable and supportive. ThirdLove also has luscious and comfortable organic underwear, if you want to spring for a full set.

2. Organic Basics

This Copenhagen-based B Corp brand was founded in 2015 and since has become one of our favorite brands to lounge and leisure in. Organic Basics make their clothes out of a variety of ethical materials, including GOTS-certified organic cotton, Tencel, and recycled nylon. They have a huge bra section, with more than 300 options in a wide range of designs and sizing. If you’re on the market for a nontoxic bra but aren’t sure exactly what you want, this is a great place to start — they’ve got options from the most minimal to the most maximal coverage. Bralette, bandeau, racerback, push-up, triangle, demi: It’s all here!
One of their bestselling options is their Core Triangle Bralette, which is made up of 90% organic cotton, 10% elastane, and has no underwire but still gives medium support (reviewers say it’s just so, so soft). Another is their Core Wireless Plunge Bra, also made of 90% cotton, which has light padding and high-level support — and it also comes in a ton of colors. The sizing isn’t as inclusive as others on this list, but reviewers say the bras conform to their bodies over a few wears.
For sustainable basics, Organic Basics can run slightly pricier than other options on this list, but they do have robust sales, and savings when you buy some of their bestsellers in packs (sorting from lowest to highest price can show you the cheaper and on-sale items up top).

Pact, the Boulder, Colorado-based brand is known for very good, ethically made, sustainable basics, primarily using GOTS-certified organic cotton without toxic chemicals or dyes. Their materials are soft and luxurious, and — in the case of their bras — most well-suited for low-impact use like daily wear and lounging. (While the bras are supportive, in other words, reviewers would categorize support level as light.)
Their bras and camis are all wireless and designed to give second-skin-level comfort. Their bestselling Everyday Classic T-Shirt Bra comes in a variety of colors, is soft and breathable, and is beloved even by those who don’t normally love a bralette style. Their Everyday Shelf Bra Camisole is another fan fave, even for those who don’t normally love a shelf bra. There’s not a ton of shaping or hold, and reviewers generally buy for the next-level comfort.
Pact is a good value pick, according to reviewers and our editors; if you end up liking one of their bras, they have sets that offer more savings. The material is a touch thinner than other options but holds up well over time. Just be careful how you wash them, because some reviewers note their bras shrank on a hot washing machine cycle. When in doubt, size up, and be sure to check out their fan-favorite undies while you’re there.

MATE, the LA-based, B Corp, female-founded company is primarily known for loungewear and activewear, made locally and with zero-plastic packaging — but they’ve also got a great sports bra selection (all the more impressive because sports bras aren’t often made with natural fibers). Their bras and tanks are awesome, too, so don’t sleep on that section of their website! They use primarily GOTS-certified organic cotton and nontoxic dyes, with no poly, nylon, or forever chemicals.
The Organic Stretch Sports Bra, a bestseller, comes in multiple colors and is a plant-based alternative to a synthetic sports bra. It’s unpadded and double layered, with 8% spandex for a touch of stretch. Reviewers say it works for a variety of exercises, including intense classes and even running. Check each color; some of them have more extensive sizing than others. The Stretch V Neck Bra is also a bestseller, made specifically for low-impact activity.
If you’re looking for a non-sports bra option, their Triangle Bralette is a bestseller. It’s a pullover fit that’s minimally designed and lightweight, but it’s still supportive and long-lasting. Their Scoop Bralette, also popular, has more substantial straps and a double layer if you’re looking for something with more robust support. Organic bamboo can be great for your sheets, but it’s also an ethical alternative to synthetics in your clothing! Boody, which is B Corp certified, offers OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified organic bamboo that they test independently for harmful substances. There’s also great variety in their bra selection, from full bust to maternity and t-shirt options, and they actually offer a full guide on that page for which bra might be right for you (as well as a detailed size guide). Their 30-day guarantee lets you try the bra out without worrying you can’t return it if it isn’t for you.
Their designs are wireless but provide good hold, according to reviewers, and the bras are extremely budget-friendly. They have options for fuller busts — they will usually specify right in the title or in the description — and they show the products on models of different sizes to help you understand how it’ll fit on you. The Crop Bralette is a fan fave, specifically designed for B through D cups with medium support. Their Racerback is also beloved and designed for up to an F cup with equal parts support and breathability.
Not only are the bras good value, but you can buy a 3, 5, or 7 pack of bras for increased savings if you find an option you love. One quick thing to note: bamboo can take a little longer to air-dry than cotton, and the designs can run a bit small, so size up if you’re unsure or between sizes.

If you’re wondering why the material is so great for bras, it’s naturally moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating, keeping sweat and stinkiness at bay while helping you stay cool or warm depending on whichever one you need. Travelers and people who have to stay active all day swear by the material as being long-lasting and comfortable, even under intense activity — not to mention that it’s more natural than synthetics. Branwyn uses regenerative and sustainable wool that’s ZQ+, Woolmark, and RWS-certified GLDN spun certified.
Branwyn’s bras are a small, but mighty, selection of options. They’re a bit more of an investment than others on this list, but you can also bundle and save. The Essential Bralette has good color choice in particular, and it’s seamless — no uncomfortable, itchy sides to aggravate your skin. This option runs a touch small and is good for low-impact activity, according to the brand and reviewers. Their Busty Bra, on the other hand, works for chests of larger sizes (hence the name) and has thousands of rave reviewers for its coverage and comfort. Complete the set with some merino undies, also beloved by fans of the brand.

Cottonique is an allergy-free apparel brand that’s made specifically for people with reactive skin (whether it be from allergies, contact dermatitis, eczema, or other sensitivities). They’re particularly well-known for their 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton clothing, with no synthetic elastics, spandex, or metal hardware — and no PFAS, chemical dyes or finishes, or latex or spandex. Their website will let you sort by sensitivity/allergy, biodegradability, and even microbiome-friendly options.
Their bras live up to these high standards, naturally, and some also work for parents who are nursing or pumping. Their styles range from full-coverage and front-closure to pullover and racerback; generally, their designs are less minimal so as to better offer support and extra comfort. Their Front Closure Support Bra is a bestseller, with two hypoallergenic plastic closures at the front and a double layer cotton lining for comfort and ease of movement. Not all of their items are organic, but they do have a Cloud Cotton collection of bras, camis, and underpants for you to peruse. Their bras are sleek and comfortable, mainly in bralette and demi styles. There’s inclusive sizing; the brand uses a 0-5 measurement system that goes all the way to G cup and has an easy conversion system so you know which size you are.
Their Whipped Non-Wire Bra is a bestseller, with a wireless design that’s perfect for lounging in and a bunch of gorgeous colors. Reviewers rave about its comfort, saying it’s like wearing nothing (the highest of compliments when it comes to wearing a bra), and do note that it runs a touch small. You save more if you buy it as a two-pack, and they have adorable matching underpants as well. Their Cutout Bra is another fave, with a slightly heavier fabric feel and a construction that’ll hold up to more wear and tear. The Bralette is a shelf bra that’s apparently absolutely perfect for sleeping. This brand might be another pair to hand-wash or wash on a cold cycle, FYI.

Araks is a luxury New York-based label founded in 2000, and their designs are colorful, minimal, utterly gorgeous, and eco-conscious to boot. Their items are made in the USA, and they use local, small-batch manufacturing. As such, this is more of an investment than others on this list, but that extra cost comes with gorgeous styles that look and feel luxurious. If you browse their cotton lingerie section, they have amazing bra and underpant sets for an added dose of coordinated glam. And they’ve got a surprisingly inclusive and easy-to-understand size chart, broken down by specific cup and band size. They also have a fun bra style quiz broken out by material, size, and support!
In particular, Araks’ Antonia Bralette comes in some truly stunning colors. It’s a soft cup pull-on style that’s handmade in cotton rib with a crochet trim. The Sofia Underwire Bra is also a standout (although the sizing isn’t as expansive), and it’s basically an underwire version of the Antonia with a gorgeous picot trim. Both are 100% Organic Cotton GOTS Certified and incredibly soft to the touch. You’ll want to hand-wash these pieces, and try them on when you get them right away: the return policy on most items is 14 days.
