Soft, naturally sweetened vegan chocolate chip coffee cake made with oat flour, Medjool dates, and dark chocolate chips. Gluten-free option included and ready in just 20 minutes.

If your ideal afternoon snack involves coffee and cake, you’re in the right place. This vegan chocolate chip coffee cake is soft, lightly spiced, naturally sweetened with dates, and perfectly balanced with rich dark chocolate chips and a subtle espresso kick. Basically, it understands the assignment.

Whether you’re looking for a healthier coffee cake, a dairy-free dessert, or an easy vegan bake that doesn’t taste “healthy,” this one delivers.

    Optional Add-Ons

    • Crumble Topping: For a classic coffee cake vibe, mix oat flour, coconut sugar, and a little coconut oil to sprinkle on top before baking.
    • Nutty Boost: Add chopped walnuts or pecans for extra texture.
    • Spice It Up: Add a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom for a twist.

Vegan Chocolate Chip Coffee Cake [gluten-free + date-sweetened]

Tips for the best coffee cake

    • Use soft Medjool dates for the smoothest texture. If they’re a bit dry, soak them in hot water for a few minutes before blending.
    • The espresso powder enhances the chocolate flavor without making the cake taste like coffee, so don’t skip it.
    • For extra vibes, sprinkle a few chocolate chips on top before baking.

    When to serve this cake

This vegan chocolate chip coffee cake is perfect for weekend brunch, afternoon coffee breaks, healthier dessert cravings, meal-prepped snacks, or sharing with friends who swear they don’t like vegan desserts.

Moist, lightly sweet, and just indulgent enough, this is one of those recipes you’ll come back to again and again. Enjoy with a hot cup of coffee and maybe guard the last slice, it tends to disappear fast. 😉

    1. This looks delicious! I love dates in baked goods as they always give a caramel like taste and chewy texture! Yum!

    2. UM YES. Love how you added the dates to make this sweet! I loovveeee coffee and recently fell in love with Dunkin Donuts brand. It’s not big over here in CA, so I only just discovered it! I take it black with sweetener 🙂

    3. It looks SO SO soft and chocolatey Kaila; I would LOVE to try this. <3

    4. As a former coffee shop owner I’m obviously a coffee addict hard core! We used to make our own cold brew at the shop and I still do at home. Its so easy and delicious ! To be honest I don’t like to eat anything with my coffee, I drink it just for its taste but this coffee cake sure does look amazing!

    5. loving this coffee cake, one coffee lover to another! i found Kohana to be little strong for my taste but with almond milk and little sugar, its delish!

    6. This was made just for me, right? Because based on the ingredients and the flavors and my current coffee obsession I think it must’ve been 🙂 I am not quite cool enough to have tried out the cold brew thing yet, but coffee + chocolates + date sand you have my attention!! It looks amazing, there is no way I would get 8 servings out of it though haha 😉

    26. I’ve been making this kind of chocolate chip coffee cake for years. It works well as either a normal coffee cake or made into muffins.

    27. ok, I am not a coffee drink or a dessert person but this does sound good- in fact chocolate and I don’t meet very often, I opt for carob instead so I can share with my dogs. I may try to make my carob coffee cake one of these days! Any ideas for changing chocolate and dates up to dog-friendly ingredients!?!??!?!

    39. Vidhi says:

Hi!!! This looks so delicious but I am confused what 1/4th cup cold coffee means. Is it 1/4 cup of ground coffee, or desired amount of coffee in 1/4th cup cold water? I see an additional ingredient (espresso powder), so just confused why there is coffee twice. But I am soooo excited to try it out once I can figure this out 👑🤤
