A bowl of fruit on the counter might be aesthetically pleasing, but it’s not the best way to store apples to maximize their freshness. And in this season of apple pies and crumbles, this isn’t the time to let your precious apples turn brown. To find the best food storage container for the fruit, I spoke with Jessica Randhawa, founder, head chef, and recipe developer at The Forked Spoon, and she recommended the OXO Good Grips GreenSaver Produce Keeper.

Randhawa uses the BPA-free plastic container to store her preferred type of apples, organic Honeycrisps. “I love that my OXO Good Grips Green Saver Produce Keeper keeps my expensive whole apples fresh longer in my refrigerator, alongside all my other produce,” she says. No matter if you prefer red or green, Fuji or Golden Delicious, this clever OXO container is a smart way to help apples last in the fridge for longer.

The container includes a removable, elevated basket that can double as a colander and keep the apples dry when stored in the fridge. This OXO container’s 4.3-quart capacity can fit a few apples, though it comes in five sizes total, ranging from a 1.6-quart size for berries to a 2.8-quart herb keeper and a 5-quart container that’s great for storing lettuce.

This OXO find is particularly suited to apple storage because of its adjustable vent and activated carbon filter that absorbs ethylene gas, which is released as apples ripen. The filters should be replaced every 90 days, and a 4-pack sells for $13 at Amazon.

“Ethylene is a plant hormone that coordinates a triggered ripening response,” says Chef Randhawa, who studied Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology in college. “Apples, bananas, and avocados are notorious ethylene producers. I always have apples and avocados in my fridge, and this product works well for me.”

At $24, the food storage container is on the pricier end for plastic, but the unique filter, vent, and basket work together, slowing your apples from going bad and reducing food waste. Whether you love to eat an apple a day or are storing them for fall apple pies, the OXO Good Grips GreenSaver Produce Keeper can keep them fresh until you’re ready to eat them.
