I Swapped My Black Plastic Spatula for Misen’s Silicone Spatula

Black plastic kitchen utensils have made a lot of headlines lately due to reports that they may leach toxic chemicals into food when exposed to heat. While I have done a great job upgrading my Teflon pans with non-toxic cookware, my old black plastic spatula remains a little cloudy, a bit warped, and sadly, with one corner melted off.

I recently retired that black plastic spatula when I read about the potential hazards and have been using any other non-toxic cooking utensil in my arsenal to flip food in a pan or remove cookies from a baking sheet. But after one particularly messy egg experience, I decided that it’s finally time to replace the last of my black plastic utensils with something safer. That’s why I’m buying the silicone fish spatula from Misen cookware. Ranked one of Food & Wine’s best fish spatulas, it will finally complete my crock of nontoxic kitchen utensils.

Despite its name, this tool can do so much more than flip fish. Just like a regular spatula, it can be used to turn burgers, chicken, eggs, and pancakes. But what makes a fish spatula different — and dare I say, better — is that it’s angled and thinner, meaning it can easily get under delicate food items, and has slots to let oil drain through.

Most fish spatulas are made from stainless steel, but Misen’s has a BPA-free silicone trim that runs from the left side of its metal blade to its flat base, so it won’t scratch up nonstick pans. The lightweight tool also has a comfortable, heat-resistant silicone handle that makes it easy to maneuver. Testing Editor Jennifer Zyman, who used the Misen fish spatula to flip fish, eggs, and burgers, found it to be stiffer than other models she tried, but “incredibly versatile.” Zyman had no difficulty cleaning the spatula and could easily get between the grooves with a sponge. But, she noted, “If you like convenience, it is dishwasher safe.” However, hand washing is best if you want to prolong the life of your spatula.

Amazon shoppers call the Misen fish spatula “absolutely perfect” for retrieving food from their air fryer. “The silicone edge keeps it from scratching my air fryer and my non-stick pans.”

Another customer swapped their black plastic spatula for this fish spatula and couldn’t be happier. “Safe to use and easy to lift and turn my food,” they said. “I would definitely recommend it to everyone.”

If, like me, you’re ready to trade your black plastic spatula for a quality non-toxic cooking utensil, the Misen fish spatula is the ideal pick. At $20, you’d have to fish around for a more budget-friendly option.
