The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We live in cozy sweaters during the colder months — these are our favorite brands for sweaters and cardigans that are sustainable, made from natural and eco-friendly materials, and size-inclusive.

Say goodbye to nights on the boardwalk, summer sunsets, and effortless tank tops, and hello to crisp evenings, chic jackets, and most of all, cozy sweaters! While we’ll miss the warmer days, autumn invites us into cozier moments and a quieter headspace. Plus, the change in seasons gives us a chance to revamp and refine our wardrobes; we’re always looking for ways to be more mindful and intentional with our garments — blending form, function, and fair trade.

    Why shop for sustainable sweaters?

Shopping for sustainable sweaters means investing in clothing that’s better for both you and the planet. Sustainable sweaters are made from natural, eco-friendly materials like organic cotton, wool, or recycled fibers, which help reduce environmental impact by avoiding harmful chemicals and conserving resources. These sweaters not only feel softer and more breathable but also tend to be more durable, so you can enjoy them for years to come without worrying about wear and tear (which is often a problem when shopping fast fashion clothing items). By opting for sustainable options, you’re supporting ethical production practices, reducing waste, and promoting a healthier planet.

It’s also important to consider size inclusivity when selecting a sustainable sweater brand. Inclusive sizing ensures that everyone, regardless of body shape or size, has access to clothing that fits well and feels great. A truly sustainable brand values diversity and designs for real people, and not just a limited range of sizes. For fall and winter this year, we’re wearing sustainable sweaters from inclusive brands that we love. These companies put people over profit while maintaining ethical, eco-conscious, and fair trade production practices. So cozy up!

    Our criteria:

Our team has lived in sustainable sweaters through cool California nights and harsh New York winters. After wearing, researching, and corresponding with sustainable fashion brands for years, we’ve selected our favorite brands for sustainable sweaters and cardigans that are made of natural and eco-friendly materials and size-inclusive, too. We regularly update this list with new favorites that meet the following criteria.

    • SUSTAINABLE | From sourcing materials, to thoughtful production and labor practices, to low-waste manufacturing, these brands are all sustainable and have the credentials and certifications to back it up.
    • NATURAL/ECO-FRIENDLY | The materials used in these sweaters are all natural and/or eco-friendly and engineered to keep you warm and comfortable.
    • SIZE INCLUSIVE | We’ve included brands that offer a large range of sizes so there’s something here for everyone.

For full fall fashion, pair them with some ethical denim, and sustainable purses and boots. 👢

Our Editor’s Review | “Obsessed is an understatement for how I feel about this sweatshirt. While I’ve generally gravitated towards crewnecks in the past, I feel like I’ve entered my pullover sweatshirt era — ever since finding a Reformation half-zip in a thrift store last winter. As soon as I unwrapped the half-zip, I put it on and was transported to my teenage years (remember the soft interior fleece of sports/choir hoodies before you washed them?). The main difference is that the MATE sweatshirt is GOTS Certified Organic fleece and stays soft and cozy, even after washing.” – Kayti Christian, Senior Content Strategist [Read our full review.]

Customer Review | “This is a beautiful and unique sweater. There are so many things to love about it. The fiber is soft against the skin and it’s ethically sourced. The color is gorgeous and rich, I really love the contrast of the warm golden yellow striping against the teal-ish marine blue. The design is very unique with bell like sleeves and side slits. One of the things I love the best is that the turtleneck part is just right. There isn’t so much fabric that I feel crowded. It’s just perfect. I’m considering buying the black one even though I don’t wear a lot of black because the sweater is so nice. Worth the money spent. Quality piece. Thanks Kotn!” – Melissa J. (Read all reviews.)
