If you are looking for the ultimate summer read, consider yourself warned: Sometime This Century by Samantha Silva will completely steal your sleep. I get up ridiculously early to work on my blog, but I found myself sneaking out of bed in the wee hours of the morning just to squeeze in “a few more chapters.” It is, hands down, the funniest book I’ve read all summer.

    The Setup

The story follows Annabel Blake, an Austen-obsessed book nerd and aspiring writer who feels like she was born in the wrong century. After her hot author crush brutally tells her that her novel reads like she’s never been in love (ouch!), she gets a chance at redemption. Her ex-pat boss sends her to England to handle her family’s crumbling country house. One thing leads to another, and an invitation hidden in an antique desk leads her to a local Regency Society ball.

Enter Henry Leighton D’Evercy, the achingly perfect, impossibly swoon-worthy, and seemingly way out of her league man of her dreams. But when Annabel’s audacious influencer sister, Cassie, and her super-chill ex-boyfriend, Billy, crash the party, things take an unbelievable turn: the trio wakes up trapped in the actual Regency era.

    What Worked

The Hilarious Setup: Watching an influencer like Cassie and a totally relaxed ex-boyfriend like Billy trying to navigate a world with zero Wi-Fi, no lattes, and strict social rules are pure comedy gold.
The Romance: The banter and chemistry between Annabel and D’Evercy deliver all the swoon-worthy, classic comedy-of-manners tropes you could want.
Heart and Identity: Beneath the time-travel hijinks and laughs, it’s a genuinely heartfelt story about sisterhood, finding your own voice, and deciding whether you want to write your love story or actually live it.

    The One Flaw

If I had to nitpick one thing, it’s that Silva didn’t include an epilogue. After spending so much time invested in Annabel, Cassie, Billy, and D’Evercy, I really wanted that final snapshot to see where everyone landed. A strong epilogue would have made the ending feel just a bit more satisfying.

    My Final Verdict

Despite wanting just a little bit more at the very end, Sometime This Century by Samantha Silva delivers an absolute blast of reading pleasure. It’s a witty, addicting mashup of modern rom-com energy and classic Jane Austen charm. If you’re a lover of time-travel romance like I am, then you owe it to yourself to read this book.

Thanks to Harper Perennial and HarperCollins for this #gifted book for this review.
