    Yesterday, I attended United Airlines’ fun Media Day in one of their LAX hangars. Before the event started, United had already sent out a press release packed with announcements and there was a lot to digest. But one thing they purposely kept under wraps was the big surprise: the introduction of their new “Relax Row.”

    The crowd buzzed with excitement and I was no exception. It immediately took me back to Air New Zealand’s delivery flight in 2010 when they first introduced a similar concept (photo below). As it turns out, United collaborated with their Star Alliance partner on the design. It is based on Air NZ’s patented idea.

    Photo of Air NZ's Sky Couch which is three seats of economy with bedding and pillowsWhat is Relax Row?

    Much like Air New Zealand’s version, the United Relax Row is a set of Economy seats that can transform into a couch, offering extra comfort for long-haul travelers. Each dedicated row consists of three seats with individually adjustable leg rests that fold up at a 90-degree angle, giving passengers more room to sleep, stretch out, or enjoy a movie.

    United describes it as: “ideal for families traveling with small children, solo travelers, and couples who want the value of United Economy but with a little extra comfort.” In practice, taller travelers might find it a bit snug.

    For example, I tried it out and my feet were hanging over the edge of the seat. I did not want to curl up on the seat with my shoes on. One of my flight attendant friends joked on Facebook: “Sir, we are going to need your feet out of the aisle 😁” She was not wrong.

    Despite that, I am genuinely excited about the concept. My wife could curl up with one of our kids, or our two little ones (ages 6 and 9) could share a row together. I would just need to book the third seat while my wife and I sat nearby.

    Social Media Reactions

    Travelers on United’s Instagram were just as enthusiastic:

    @stampsofpam: “The reason you’re #1 >>> can’t wait to board this flight!! 💙”
    @flytpa: “WOWOWOWOWOW”
    @ericrubens: “The good news just keeps coming 😍”
    @journeyandjot: “Game changer for parents flying with little kids!”

    Extra Amenities

    Passengers in Relax Row will also get some nice extras. United is including a custom-fitted mattress pad, a specially sized plush blanket, two additional pillows, and for families, a plush toy plus a Children’s Travel Kit. All of this adds up to a much more comfortable experience than standard Economy, especially on long flights.

    When and Where

    The United Relax Row is expected to launch in 2027. By 2030, the airline plans to offer it on more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 widebody aircraft. Each plane will feature the seats between United Economy and Premium Plus, with up to 12 Relax Row sections per aircraft.

    YouTube video

    Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, summed it up nicely: “We are committed to delivering new, industry-leading experiences for all of our customers, and the United Relax Row is the perfect example. Customers traveling in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve an option for more space and comfort, and this is one way we can deliver that for them.”

    I have to agree. United is clearly delivering industry-leading experiences. Alongside Delta, they are setting a new standard for premium travel and innovation, and the Relax Row looks like it will be a game-changer for families and long-haul flyers alike.
