Bathrooms can get grubby pretty quickly, thanks to soap scum and water deposits. And because of all that water and humidity, they can be breeding grounds for mould and mildew.
We used to buy a daily shower spray, to help keep things fresher in between deep cleans, but then when I was pregnant with my first daughter, the smell of the eco brand we used to buy made me feel really nauseous. That’s when I started experimenting with my own version.
Since then, I’ve tried a few iterations of a natural shower spray over the years. The one in my book I wrote back in 2017 contained borax, and unfortunately, some people found it left their shower screens streaky. It was the only recipe that people reported problems with, and sincerest apologies if this happened to you.
However, I’ve settled on my favourite recipe, which contains no borax, so it won’t leave streaky marks. Promise!
How To Make Homemade Shower Spray
Here’s everything you need to know to make your own daily shower spray:
Ingredients
- 75 ml vodka – don’t be fancy, go for the cheapest, plainest, unflavoured vodka you can find.
- 2 drops of peppermint essential oil (try Tisserand or Neal’s Yard)
- 6 drops of tea tree essential oil
- 150 ml cooled boiled water

Method
- Pour 150 ml of cooled boiled water into your measuring jug.
- Add the vodka and the tea tree and mint essential oils.
- Mix to combine, and then decant the solution into the spray bottle. Job done!
How To Use
This homemade daily shower spray couldn’t be easier to use. Simply shake the bottle before every use, and then give your shower tiles and glass screen a light mist after every shower to help keep it soap scum and mould-free.
It’s best to use it in a well-ventilated room, so open a window if possible for at least 10 minutes after spraying. If your bathroom doesn’t have a window, leave the extractor fan running for 15 minutes after spraying, or leave the bathroom door open, to help ventilate the room.
For even better results, lightly spray your shower area and then dry it off with a towel or squeegee (the world’s funnest word to type!).
The spray isn’t a substitute for deep cleaning. You’ll still need to give your bathroom a deep clean at least once a week, but this helps keep things fresh.
Storage Instructions
Make sure you label your bottle, and keep it in a cool, dark spot away from children and pets. It should keep for around 8 weeks, but discard it sooner if it starts to look or smell funny.
Make sure you use cooled, boiled water. If you use have used tap water, it will have a much shorter life-span – possibly a week maximum. This is because boiling the water helps remove any microorganisms that can shorten the shelf life.
Why This Shower Spray Works
This daily shower spray works to help keep your shower free of soap scum, mould and mildew thanks to its combination of ingredients.
The alcohol content of the vodka helps inhibit the growth of bacteria and mould spores that thrive in warm, damp bathrooms. It also helps cut down on soap scum.
Tea tree essential oil is well-known for its antifungal and antibacterial properties. This is particularly helpful when it comes to keeping your shower clean.
Meanwhile, peppermint essential oil isn’t as antifungal as tea tree oil, but it does have mild antimicrobial qualities. Peppermint oil also helps to neutralise any musty smells in your bathroom.
Safety Considerations
As I’ve previously mentioned, it’s important to label the bottle and keep it away from children and pets.
There is some concern that essential oils, like tea tree and mint, can be harmful to cats and dogs, and to pregnant people. I only ever use oils highly diluted, so I personally feel the risk is very low, especially compared to the risks posed by conventional cleaning products. However, I always encourage you to do your own research into whether they are right for you to use or not.
If you have pets and do decide to use the spray, you can err on the side of caution by keeping your pets out of the bathroom while you spray your shower. You can also ventilate the room and keep your pets out until the surfaces are dry to the touch.
