The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve slept on dozens of sheet sets over the years — these are the softest ones we’ve found made with natural fabrics that are nontoxic, affordable, and will last.

Whether you’re a cold sleeper who loves flannel or a hot sleeper who prefers crisp and cool percale, one thing’s certain: You still want your sheets to be soft. Buttery to the touch and comfortable all year round, soft sheets are a game-changer (especially if you like to, ahem, sleep in the nude).

What are the best fabrics for soft sheets?

There are many factors that go into making a high quality bed sheet, and we find that natural fibers, fabric quality, weave, and thread count play the biggest roles in how soft your bed sheets will be. Natural materials like Egyptian, pima and supima cotton as well as bamboo when blended with premium cotton tend to create the softest sheets with a smooth and silky feel. Sheets made with these fabrics are of higher quality due to their long-staple fibers that produce a smoother and less scratchy feel than conventional cotton or other materials.

When it comes to weave, the softest you’ll find will be either sateen weave, percale weave, or jersey knit. If you’re looking for that luxurious feel, sateen weave sheets will offer that, while percale softens over time and jersey knit offers a more casual comfy feel. Now the big question, how thread count impacts all this! We find that the optimal range for soft bed sheets that are still durable will be between 300 and 600 (anything higher than 600 won’t necessarily make your sheets feel any softer). And don’t forget, when it comes to maintaining the softness of your bed sheets, how you care for them makes all the difference! Using mild detergents will help keep your bed sheets in the best shape for long term use.

    Our criteria:

After sleeping on, researching, and corresponding with the top brands for years, we can confidently recommend who has the softest sheets out there. The options on the list below are all buttery soft, made of natural and nontoxic materials, affordable, and made to last.

    • NATURAL & NONTOXIC | All of the sheets on this list are made of natural and nontoxic ingredients so your soft sheets are also breathable and free of any harsh chemicals. We’ve included third-party certifications to back up their chops.
    • AFFORDABLE | This list includes sheets at various price points, including more affordable ones, so that you can find the right set for you at any budget.
    • DURABLE | High-quality, natural materials mean that these sheets are durable and will last you years to come. Many brands have warranties that back this up — and some even promise that you sheets will get softer wash after wash.

    Best Overall | Sijo, $110+
    Most Affordable | Homebird, $152
Best For Linen | MagicLinen, $374

    1. Sijo

    Sheet Materials | Eucalyptus TENCEL
Price of Queen Sheets | Starting at $110

Sijo’s sheets are so cooling and silky; you know the feeling of having clean shaved legs and slipping into freshly laundered sheets? That’s what our Sijo sheets feel like every day. This brand is dedicated to “bedding made better,” and its airy eucalyptus line is simultaneously cooling, lightweight, and supremely soft. (Don’t take our word for it, see the 2,900+ reviews and our editor review that tout the same!) We also love that you can order a sheet set without a top sheet if you’re like us millennials who prefer to sleep without one. 😉 Using 100 percent TENCEL lyocell, these sheets are also anti-microbial, hypoallergenic, and free of dangerous chemicals.

Our Editor’s Review | “Overall, I’ve got a big bedding crush on Sijo. The prices are more accessible than many other sustainable bedding brands, and the products are well-constructed and luxurious to the touch.” – Emily McGowan, Editorial Director at The Good Trade [Read the full review.]

    2. Pact

    Sheet Materials | Sateen cotton
Price of Queen Sheets | $150

Pact is best known for its ethical apparel, but don’t sleep on its affordable bedding — or, actually, you should. With hundreds of five-star reviews, the Room Service Sateen Sheet Set is available in seven gorgeous colors and six sizes, so you can have that hotel bed experience wherever you are. The fabric is entirely GOTS certified organic cotton sateen — made responsibly in India — and it’s silky and snuggly without being too warm. These sheets are so impressive that they were named the Best Cotton Sheets of 2020 by the Sleep Foundation.

Our Editor’s Review | “For anyone who craves a touch of luxury, Pact’s sateen sheets are the way to go. They have a silky, buttery texture that feels like an upscale silk sheet with less of a shine and more of a cool texture.” – Langa Chinyoka, Contributing Editor at The Good Trade [Read the full review.]

    3. MagicLinen

Sheet Materials | European flax linen
Price of Queen Sheets | $374

For sheets made one all natural material — and one material only — we look to MagicLinen‘s 100% European flax linen bed sheets. Handmade in small batches in Lithuania, these soft and cooling OEKO-TEX certified bed sheets are sure to turn any simple bedroom into a luxury oasis. With 27 color and pattern options, every linen sheet is stonewashed for maximum softness and uses a midweight linen — meaning these sheets are more durable and structured than your average linen sheet (while still offering moisture-wicking properties and temperature regulation). Our editor recently elevated her guest room with a set of MagicLinen bed sheets and adores how soft and luxurious they feel!

Our Editor’s Review | “MagicLinen scores an easy 11/10 in my book — for hot sleepers, for the whole bedding lineup, and for linens that will leave your guests asking, “Where are these sheets from?” Yes, it’s an investment, but the price feels fair (and worth every penny) when you think about how much better you’ll sleep — and feel — every night.” – Kayti Christian, Senior Content Strategist at The Good Trade [Read the full review.]

    4. Piglet in Bed

    Sheet Materials | Cotton, linen
Price of Queen Sheets | Starts at $306

From elegant linen bedding to classic cotton bedding, and even a unique linen-cotton hybrid (looks like linen yet feels soft like cotton), Piglet in Bed has truly outdone itself with their wide selection of cozy bed sheets. The brand makes it easy to build your dream bedding set with their bundling options, available for their cotton, linen, and linen-cotton bedding sets. Mix and match your favorite sheet, duvet, and pillowcase colors and patterns on their website, and you can see how your creation will look before making your purchase! Orders over $75 ship free.

    5. Brooklinen

Sheet Materials | Cotton & Himalayan cashmere
Price of Queen Sheets | $350

Is there anything more luxurious to sleep in than cashmere? Well, maybe Brooklinen’s Heathered Cashmere sheets (made with cotton and Himalayan cashmere). Thoughtfully designed, these sheets are brushed for optimal softness, fully OEKO-TEX certified, and machine-washable (though you may want to keep a de-pilling device on hand; it is cashmere, after all). The core set includes a fitted sheet, flat sheet, and two pillowcases. Returns can be made up to 365 days, so you can sleep ‘n’ see if they’re the softest sheets for you.

Our Editor’s Review | “Affordable luxury might seem like an oxymoron, but Brooklinen makes it happen. The brand discovered that the high price of bedding had much to do with supply chain length; if they cut out the middlemen, employed small-scale entrepreneurs for production, and sold direct to consumers online, they could keep the bedding more affordable. Their transparent supply chain adheres to strict labor standards while reducing textile waste and carbon emissions.”  – Trinity Wilbourn, Contributing Editor at The Good Trade [Read the full review.]

Each bed sheet also comes in a reusable cotton bag in efforts to reduce plastic packaging and so you can travel with them easily if need be! The pistachio shade is our editor’s favorite for a modern and classic feel.

Our Editor’s Review | “ After testing their linen and eucalyptus sheets, washed cotton duvet cover, and Matelassé blanket, I’d recommend Under the Canopy as an affordable option for sustainable and good-quality bedding in stylish colors. Under the Canopy is ideal for those looking to try out more sustainable bedding, without having to overcommit on price.” – Natalie Gale, Contributing Editor at The Good Trade [Read the full review.]

    9. Homebird

    Sheet Materials | Cotton
Price of Queen Sheets | $152

Homebird is a Canadian brand we adore for its intentional ethos, cost-effective prices, and gorgeous colors. Started by Saloni and Gaurav Sangai — both of whom are originally from India — this work is deeply personal. Homebird exclusively works with Fair Trade Certified partners in India to ensure high quality, sustainable materials, and fair wages for all involved. Homebird ships across Canada and the US (with free shipping as well as a 45-night risk-free trial). For the ultimate in cozy, go for the sateen set, but if you prefer a cool and crisp set, we love the percale sheets!

Customer Review | “Really happy to support a small Canadian business! The pillowcases are just what I was looking for: as someone with a tactile sensory processing disorder (an autistic trait), finding pillowcases that are soft and crisp enough not to irritate my skin or overwhelm my senses, feels like a small miracle…A++.”  – Viki B. (Read all reviews.)

A neatly made bed with gray bedding and multiple pillows sits next to large windows with plants outside; an open book lies on the bed in a bright, modern bedroom.

    10. Coyuchi

    Sheet Materials | Cotton, linen
Price Range | Starting at $198

Not only are Coyuchi’s sheet sets endlessly soft and crisp (magically!), but they’re also sustainably made, saving up to 2000+ days of drinking water and nine miles worth of driving emissions. The Organic Crinkled Percale Sheets are another great option for warm sleepers, with just the right amount of wrinkle for that effortless “worn in” look. The organic cotton is grown in India, and every part of production is done ethically. If the retail price feels too out of reach, consider Coyuchi’s secondhand shop as well for discounted options.

Our Editor’s Review | “As I mentioned earlier, I am very picky about the textures and materials that I surround myself with when I sleep. Thankfully, these bedsheets are incredibly soft and designed with sensitive skin in mind. They’re made from GOTS Certified organic cotton, making them lightweight and breathable. I was so happy to have found sheets that are not only soft but also allow me to get a good night’s sleep without overheating.” – Brianna Schubert, Contributing Editor at The Good Trade [Read the full review.]
