The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve researched and tested hundreds of kitchenware brands — these are our favorite options offering wooden utensils that are nontoxic and easy to clean.

If the saying “you are what you eat” is true (and we’re inclined to say it is), then it’s clear that we can’t only be cognizant of the foods we eat. We must keep an eye on how we prepare them, too. Many meals are prepared in plastic containers that can leach chemicals into our foods, or come with PFAS (more on that shortly) that can be a danger to our health. Plus, we want our cookware to last and most utensils run the risk of scratching our pots and pans.

That’s why we recommend switching to naturally derived utensils instead, like wooden spoons or bamboo spatulas. Not only do they make the kitchen a more beautiful place to be, but they’re gentle enough to use daily. They’re better for the planet too, nontoxic and antimicrobial, and can withstand some serious heat (since they don’t conduct it).

    So that’s just part of the reason we’re pro-wooden utensils…they’re also PFAS-free.

What are PFAS — and why are they on my cooking utensils?

PFAS — or per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances — are artificial substances that have been around for almost a century. Per the American Cancer Society, they’re used as nonstick coatings and products that repel oil, stains, grease, and water. As you can imagine then, PFAS are found in all sorts of kitchenware, from food packaging to nonstick surfaces to cooking utensils.

The issues with PFAS is that they don’t break down in the environment, can contaminate water sources, and build up in wildlife. According to the EPA, PFAS exposure can affect growth and development in humans and animals so it’s best to avoid PFAS as much as possible.

Our team has personally tested, researched, and vetted hundreds of kitchenware lines to find you the best brands offering beautiful and easy-to-clean nontoxic wooden cooking utensils for your kitchen. Instead of PFAS-heavy materials like plastic, these spatulas, spoons, and ladles are made from wood and bamboo. They’re hand-crafted, designed to last, and safe enough to use every day.

If you’re in the market for more nontoxic cookware, check out our guide to the best nontoxic pots and pans. 🍳
